Industrial Electrical Engineering (EWI)
The development of industrial and economic sectors is characterised by the increase in diverse processes based on the division of labour and the specialisation of workforce. A successful corporate strategy is therefore not limited to developing technically convincing solutions. These must also be implemented economically. The Bachelor's programme in Industrial Electrical Engineering (EWI) combines electrotechnical and business-related contents. It enables graduates to work together in interdisciplinary teams to solve complex technical problems under economic aspects. Industrial engineers can control their implementation in a company, know the economic influencing parameters and can determine them. For students of the EMI Bachelor's degree programme, specialisation is possible in the subject areas of energy technology, information technology and communications engineering.

Pre-study internship
Studienbewerber und -bewerberinnen haben vor Aufnahme des Studiums (15.07. oder 15.01.) ein Praktikum bzw. eine fachbezogene Ausbildung von 6 Wochen nachzuweisen. Ist der Nachweis zum Immatrikulationsschluss nicht möglich, kann das Vorpraktikum bis zum Ende des 2. Semesters nachgeholt werden.
Course contents
The seven-semester programme is divided into two course sections. In the first section (Basic course), students will receive basic engineering, natural sciences and business management knowledge and skills. In the second course section (Main course, from the 4th semester onwards), students will have the opportunity to choose from one of three technical specialisations and several business-related subjects. This allows students to focus on their personal areas of interest during their course.
An internship of at least ten weeks with a qualified company is planned in the 7th semester. Students complete the course with a Bachelor's thesis.
Fields of specialisation
Energy technology is the driving force of a technologised society. However, electrical energy is increasingly no longer generated where it is needed. It must be distributed with high availability. With the many different energy producers, influenced by the fluctuations of wind and solar radiation, this is a complex task. Electrical energy is also something that moves us more and more - whether in the automotive industry (E-mobility) or in automation technology. New types of generators, e.g. for offshore use, or automated drive systems for the most diverse applications are needed. All these applications must be realised with a high degree of reliability and economy.
The study content of the specialisation in energy technology enables you to assess the interaction of these operating resources (electrical grids, energy storage systems) and drive-specific behaviour of electric motors. You will learn to apply your knowledge and skills to problems and tasks in the field of energy technology.
Modern technical systems, from smartphones to offshore wind turbines, contain software. It must reliably take over control tasks from individual components to entire plants and systems. Software is considered the key factor for efficient production and innovative products in all important industrial sectors. In concrete terms, this means that all components - from the electric drive to the measuring systems to the gate of the production hall - must be intelligently networked with each other: an exciting challenge!
The study contents of the specialisation in information technology enable you to assess distributed complex automation and information technology systems and to apply your knowledge to information technology tasks. You will learn to plan, organise and implement demanding projects in the field of technically oriented software.
In the future, more and more information will have to be transmitted and distributed between different systems in order to realise intelligent solutions. Think of communication between cars for traffic flow control, accident avoidance and much more. In the future, radio and fixed networks for data and voice will continue to grow together to form uniform communication systems. The efficient availability of any communication at any time and any place needed. To ensure this availability, innovative strategies and creative solutions are needed.
The study content of the Communications Engineering specialisation enables you to assess the function of radio systems and high-frequency technical systems as well as telecommunications systems and networks and to apply your knowledge to questions and tasks from the area of these systems. You will learn to plan, organise and implement communications engineering systems.
Qualification objectives
The overarching qualification goal of the Bachelor's degree course in Industrial Electrical Engineering is to prepare students in an application-oriented education for a qualified practical professional activity at the interface between business and technology and to enable them to take up a Master's programme.
Building on basic knowledge in mathematics and natural sciences as well as electrical engineering, economics and information technology, the degree programme in Industrial Electrical Engineering trains engineers who understand complex systems and industrial processes in their entirety and implement practical solutions. By linking electrotechnical and economic issues, graduates are able to carry out research, development and project support tasks in interdisciplinary areas and work at the interface of electrical engineering/electronics and economics where previously there were areas of friction between classic specialist departments.
To achieve this goal, electrical engineering training comprises about 70% and business training about 30% of the curriculum. The decision for this weighting was made because the engineers should later find a job in project planning, technical purchasing, production organisation, sales, energy and product management, etc., which requires a high level of technical competence, but, at the same time, demands economic qualifications.
The standard duration of the degree programme is seven semesters. The curriculum for the 7-semester Bachelor's programme includes 6 semesters of seminar courses with lectures, exercises, laboratories and project work or homework with the use of computers, as well as an application semester in which a practical phase is completed and the Bachelor's thesis is written.
In the core area of the degree programme, courses on the following electrotechnical core topics can be selected:
Energy technology, communications engineering and information technology.
In the business administration sector, students can choose topics such as cost accounting and controlling, commercial and service management or organisation.
The proportion of time spent on lectures in the higher semesters decreases in favour of laboratory work. This increases the scope of independent work. In addition, economic knowledge and interdisciplinary skills are taught, and events are offered to acquire key qualifications, e.g. teamwork skills, moderation and presentation skills, and language competence.
